The Ponds - Cagliari

Cagliari is in the middle of some of the most important wet areas of Sardinia: the Ponds of Santa Gilla and Molentargius, in fact, have been designated protected areas, due to their importance, acknowledged on international level, as stopping and nidification destinations for the pink flamingos. Also, the area is characterized by a rich biodiversity, even though it must constantly fight against the danger coming from the invading human presence and from the use of the surrounding areas as industrial estates, like it happened with the pond of  Santa Gilla, victim of a severe degradation which has put its fragile balance in real danger. However, both ponds remain an amazing natural fauna oasis, surprisingly rich of birds species, among which the heron and the cattle tyrant. For all birdwatching lovers, we recommend two basic rules: make sure to bring a good insect repellent with you, and watch the birds with discretion, limiting your presence as much as possible, so that you can really enjoy the spectacle of the “sa genti arrubia” (the red people), as the pink flamingos are called, and of the other birds populating this delicate habitat.
